In 1882, showman P.T. Barnum bought Jumbo, an African elephant, and shipped
him to the U.S. to make him a circus star. He was the largest animal in
captivity at that time, standing over eleven feet tall and weighing more
than fourteen thousand five hundred pounds. The word Jumbo came to be used
as an adjective to describe anything remarkably large.
