Course description: Extended exploration of elementary problems leading to conjectures, partial solutions, revisions, and convincing reasoning, and hence to proofs. Emphasis on problem solving, reasoning, and proving. Regular participation is required. Department enforced prerequisite: MATH 1300 or MATH 1310 or APPM 1345 or APPM 1350 (minimum grade C-). |

Course Learning Objectives: This course will develop the student's processes of mathematical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, conjecturing, and proof formation. It will also get the student used to communicating these processes effectively to others. It will complement our other core mathematics and statistics courses, where specific subject knowledge is the primary focus. |

PARTICIPATION: You are expected to attend the classes. Participation is how you show your commitment to the course and to the other students taking the course with you. You are expected to share both of your mathematical knowledge and the feelings you have as you engage in doing mathematics. Students will obtain the full 5% for class conduct by default. Points may be deducted for repeatedly being late, repeatedly leaving early, sleeping or excessive yawning in class, very poor class attendance, or obnoxious behavior.
When determining your letter grade, I will take into account (a) your attendance and punctuality, (b) the effort you put into the course and (c) your improvement during the course.

If you know that you are going to miss an exam or cannot take the final exam at the scheduled time, please notify your instructor immediately. If you miss the first midterm exam for any acceptable reason (e.g. religious obligation, documented illness), it will be replaced by your second midterm exam score, if you miss the second midterm exam for any acceptable reason, it will be replaced by your final exam score. If you miss both midterm exams for acceptable reasons, each midterm score will be replaced by your final exam score. If you miss the final exam (unless it is for an acceptable reason), you will score zero on the final and you should expect to fail the course.Religious Obligations
