Text: Sheldon Ross, A First Course in Probability, 9-th edition, Prentice Hall, 2013.

Material to be covered: Most of Chapters 1 to 8 (see tentative schedule below).

Prerequisites: Calculus 1-2-3 (Math 1300/2300/2400 or equivalent).

Homework: There will be weekly homework assignments during the semester. You should try to do the problems on your own. However, you are welcome to discuss the problems with each other and with me. Solutions will be posted.

Late Homework Policy: No penalty if you ask for extra time in person or by e-mail before the due time or if you have a documented excuse. Otherwise, late homework is accepted for half credit for one week after the due date. No homework will be accepted if it is more than one week late.

Quizzes: There will be 10-15 minutes’ quizzes, one per Chapter, during the semester.

Examinations: There will be two in-class midterms and a final (in-class, 2.5 hours).

Grading Policy: Homework (20 %), Quizzes (10%), Midterms (20% each), and Final (30%). One homework score and one quiz score will be dropped.

5510 students: Students enrolled in Math 5510, will have to do extra "in-depth" homework problems (must be submitted on a separate page) as well as extra (take home) problems on the tests. In addition, they might have to read extra sections of the text and do problems on those sections.

Final Exam: Monday, December 16, 1:30 – 4 p.m.
