In 1982, Edward Witten gave an entirely analytic "justification" of the weak
Morse inequality using a deformed Beltrami operator Lt for t>0 and
the eigenvalue asymptotics of Lt as t→∞. This suggestion was
soon turned into a complete proof by Barry Simon and it is the aim of this
talk to explain this proof.
