Modeling the Riemann zeta function

Despite 150 years of study, the Riemann zeta function remains mysterious. Recent work has attempted to understand the zeta function probabilistically by comparing the zeta function to the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix. I will describe those efforts and other attempts to understand the statistical behavior of the zeta function.
